The Best Carrier Oils for Hair Growth

Five cold-pressed oils that strengthen roots, reduce breakage, and keep the length you grow.

By the Brewoil team · Updated June 2026

If your hair feels thin, slow-growing, or prone to breakage, the oil you massage into your scalp matters more than most people realise. Cold-pressed carrier oils deliver fatty acids, vitamin E and antioxidants directly to the follicle, reduce protein loss from the hair shaft, and create the calm, well-nourished scalp environment that healthy growth depends on. Here are the carrier oils worth keeping in your routine.

1. Castor oil — the thickening classic

Castor oil is rich in ricinoleic acid, a fatty acid linked to improved scalp circulation. It is heavy and sticky, so most people blend a teaspoon into a lighter oil rather than using it neat. Used once or twice a week as a pre-wash scalp massage, it is the single most popular oil in Indian hair-care traditions for adding density to edges and brows.

2. Sweet almond oil — the daily lightweight

High in vitamin E and oleic acid, sweet almond oil absorbs quickly without weighing hair down, which makes it the ideal base for diluting heavier oils or for a leave-in smoothing of the lengths. It softens the cuticle and tames frizz between washes.

3. Rosemary (in a carrier) — the research favourite

Rosemary essential oil has been studied for pattern hair loss with encouraging results, but it is potent and must always be diluted in a carrier before it touches your scalp. A few drops in almond or jojoba oil turns an ordinary massage into a targeted growth treatment.

4. Bhringraj & Amla — the Ayurvedic duo

Bhringraj is traditionally called "the king of hair" in Ayurveda, and amla (Indian gooseberry) is prized for strengthening roots and preserving natural colour. Both are gentle enough for regular use and pair beautifully under a warm-towel hair oiling.

How to use them: Warm 2–3 teaspoons of oil, part your hair in sections, and massage into the scalp for 5 minutes. Leave for 30 minutes to overnight, then shampoo. Two to three times a week is plenty — more oil does not mean faster growth.
