Essential oils are powerful — and that power is exactly why they should never be applied directly to the skin. Diluting them in a cold-pressed carrier oil keeps them safe, helps them spread, and lets the skin absorb them properly. This is the only dilution guide you need.
Why dilution matters
Undiluted essential oils can cause irritation, burning, and long-term sensitisation — where your skin reacts to an oil it once tolerated. A carrier oil dilutes the active compounds to a safe concentration while adding its own nourishing fatty acids.
The dilution chart
- 0.5–1% (face, sensitive skin, children over 2): 3–6 drops per 30 ml carrier
- 2% (everyday body and scalp use): about 12 drops per 30 ml carrier
- 3% (targeted, short-term, e.g. a sore muscle): about 18 drops per 30 ml carrier
Rule of thumb: 12 drops of essential oil per 30 ml (2 tablespoons) of carrier oil gives a safe ~2% blend for most adults.
