Neem Oil for Skin & Scalp

Ayurveda's great purifier — powerful, pungent, and brilliant when diluted right.

By the Brewoil team · Updated June 2026

Neem has been India's go-to purifying plant for thousands of years — chewed as twigs, brewed as tea, and pressed into one of the most powerful skin-and-scalp oils in Ayurveda. Used correctly (always diluted), neem oil is a workhorse for flaky scalps and congested, problem-prone skin.

What makes neem oil special

Cold-pressed from the seeds of Azadirachta indica, neem oil carries compounds like azadirachtin and nimbidin along with nourishing fatty acids. These give it the purifying, calming character it is famous for. The trade-off is a strong, earthy aroma — the sign of a genuinely unrefined oil — which fades after washing.

Neem for the scalp

A diluted neem treatment is the classic answer to an itchy, flaky scalp. Blend half a teaspoon of neem into two to three teaspoons of virgin coconut or sweet almond oil, massage in, leave 30 minutes, and shampoo thoroughly. Used twice a week, it keeps the scalp clean and balanced — a sensible companion to any hair-growth routine, because healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp.

Neem for skin

For congested, blemish-prone areas, mix a few drops of neem into a light carrier like jojoba and apply as a targeted night treatment. Many people also dab a diluted blend on insect bites and rough, irritated patches.

Golden rule: never use neem neat on skin. Dilute to 10–20% in a carrier oil, patch test first, and see a doctor for any persistent skin condition.
