Rosemary Oil for Hair Growth

The herb that rivalled minoxidil in one trial — used correctly, safely diluted.

By the Brewoil team · Updated June 2026

Few ingredients have crossed over from herbal tradition to viral hair-care trend quite like rosemary oil. The interest is well earned: a frequently cited 2015 trial found rosemary oil performed comparably to a 2% minoxidil solution for androgenetic alopecia over six months. Here is how to use it safely and effectively.

Why rosemary oil works on the scalp

Rosemary is thought to improve microcirculation at the follicle and has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that support a healthy scalp. A calmer, better-supplied scalp is simply a better place for hair to grow.

Important: Rosemary essential oil is highly concentrated. Never apply it neat. Always dilute it in a cold-pressed carrier oil at roughly 1–2% (about 6–12 drops per 30 ml of carrier).

A simple rosemary scalp routine

  1. Add 8–10 drops of rosemary essential oil to 30 ml of jojoba or sweet almond oil.
  2. Massage into the scalp for 5 minutes, focusing on thinning areas.
  3. Leave at least 30 minutes (or overnight), then wash.
  4. Repeat 2–3 times a week and give it a full 12 weeks before judging results.

Pair it with castor for density

Many people combine rosemary with castor oil — castor for conditioning and thickness, rosemary for the scalp stimulation. A blend of castor, a lighter carrier, and a few drops of rosemary is a complete weekly treatment.
