Why hair greys — and what oils can influence
Hair greys when melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) in the follicle slow down or stop, partly from genetics, partly from oxidative stress, nutrient deficiency (B12, iron, copper), and possibly chronic stress. Oils can't restore dead melanocytes — but by reducing scalp oxidative stress and improving follicle health, they may help slow the rate of new greying. Manage expectations accordingly.
Bhringraj — the traditional anti-greying herb oil
Bhringraj (Eclipta alba) is the most-cited Ayurvedic herb for premature greying. It's traditionally used to support melanin retention and overall hair vitality. Brewoil's Bhringraj oil is the herb infused in a carrier base. Warm, massage into the scalp, leave 30+ minutes, 2–3 times a week. It's the cornerstone of any anti-greying oil routine.
Black seed (kalonji) oil — the antioxidant support
Black seed oil's thymoquinone is a strong antioxidant. Since oxidative stress at the follicle is one greying driver, kalonji oil is a logical supporting oil. Use it in rotation with bhringraj — for example, bhringraj twice a week and kalonji once.
The full protocol
Week structure: bhringraj scalp massage twice weekly (30+ minutes before wash), black seed oil once weekly. Always massage 5 minutes minimum — circulation matters. Pair the topical routine with the nutrition side: check B12, iron, and vitamin D with a blood test, since deficiencies are a correctable greying factor that no oil can fix.
What oils genuinely cannot do
Oils cannot turn grey hair back to its original colour — that hair has lost its pigment cells permanently. Anyone promising 'grey reversal in 30 days' from an oil is misleading you. What's realistic: slower appearance of new greys, healthier and thicker-feeling hair, and a calmer scalp. For sudden or rapid greying, see a doctor to rule out a deficiency or thyroid issue.
